The University of the Arts

hi! i don't know if anyone really checks this thing anymore, but i live in a beautiful warehouse in south philly and i need a roommate. rent is $600 plus utilities, and there are no pets allowed. the apartment is a gorgeous converted factory space. it is 3,300 sq ft, with plenty of room for an artist to have a studio space in addition to their bedroom.
anyway, here is the craigslist posting, just thought i'd post it here and see if anyone was interested.
oh yeah, and there's a darkroom!

Free Amazon Prime for students [Aug. 23rd, 2010|04:01 am]
The University of the Arts

Amazon is currently giving free 1 year memberships to Amazon Prime (free 2 day shipping, $3.99 overnight shipping) to current students with a .edu email address: http://www.amazon.com/gp/student/signup/info I'm not sure how long they're offering this (it doesn't say on the site).

Just thought i'd give fellow students the heads up on this in case you haven't heard about it yet. This is going to save me a ton on shipping textbooks this year!

Project Twenty1 Film & Animation Festival (P21Fest)
October 1-4, 2009, All-Day
University City Area, Philadelphia

P21Fest is a celebration of independent film and animation in Philadelphia hosted by Project Twenty1, a volunteer-run arts organization dedicated to inspiring, connecting, exhibiting, and promoting artists from all disciplines. The festival opens with the one-time-only Philadelphia Premiere of "You Might As Well Live" (October 1 @ 7:30 pm) , an off-the-wall comedy where Robert R. Mutt embarks on a madcap adventure to attain the three keys to being a "somebody" - a girl, some money and a championship ring.

Over 50 films will screen over the 4-Day festival, including the 21-Day Filmmaking Competition films, a collection of animated & live action shorts from all over the world based on the common secret element "Key". P21Fest will also host educational workshops, including Pitch Yourself!, a seminar to teach you pitching dos and don't, along with “Speed Networking” (a business card swap similar to the style of speed dating, but more productive)

And if you're into parties, you can't miss “Shorts and Shots” (an open-mic-style casual screening you can BYOShort!) and Friday Night FX (October 2 @ 9:30 pm), a celebration of Special FX Makeup Artists at The Ellen Powell Tiberino Museum.

Nicolai Shmatko has presented his new sculpture "Ukrainian Aurora" - Yulia Timoshenko [Sep. 11th, 2009|09:32 pm]
The University of the Arts

Nicolai Shmatko has presented his new sculpture "Ukrainian Aurora" and a new sculpture group "Christ's Appearance to the Apostles".

Nicolai Shmatko has presented his new sculpture "Ukrainian Aurora" and a new sculpture group "Christ's Appearance to the Apostles". It has taken 15 years for him to create the project with the Twelve Apostles.

In his sculptures Nicolai Shmatko decided to deviate from the Bible apostles known to us. "In this sculpture there are our contemporaries, people who live near us. Only Jesus Christ is an imaginary person as nobody can pretend to be like him. We can also see Peter, his favourite disciple, doubting Thomas and Judas. Among the known Bible persons I have embodied myself and my sons"- Nicolai Shmatko retells.

http://www.kingofmarble-shmatko.com/engver/p1_project_en.html The preliminary cost of this sculpture is 1.5 mln. Euro.

The other sculpture of the Nicolai Shmatko "Ukrainian Aurora" has taken him half a year. He retells about it, "Aurora is a morning star which lights up the road of travelers and wayfarers. I decided to accent attention on this and tried to find a woman who can personify national pathos but I could not for a long time. And finally I found national Ukrainian colouring in Julia Timoshenko, Prime Minister of Ukraine".

Nicolai Shmatko estimates this sculpture in 500 thousand Euro.

The sculptor noted that he is a non-party man and has not any political sympathies to Julia Timoshenko but her image helped him to create our contemporary Aurora.

$225 - $250 artist and queer friendly home looking for 2 housemates [Jul. 22nd, 2009|01:06 pm]
The University of the Arts

Two bedrooms open in a three bedroom house for August first or sooner. Rent is either $225 - $250, depending on rooms. Utilities are split, and I am open to sharing food. Also am open to the idea of renting the rooms out as studio spaces to anyone who is interested in that. Wood floors in house.

So, the home is a typical row home in south west Philly. Larger than most though, it was build around 1910. The block has long been occupied by a large Irish working class community. The area bikeable and close to most other parts of the city, but there are also two buses. Clark Park is just over the greys ferry bridge, as well as bartrums garden and the west philadelphia tool library, the italian market is 10 minutes away. Grocery is two blocks. Small corner store, post office, and rite aid near by.

Open are the middle upstairs bedroom, and the front master bedroom. The house has a cute little yard, one bathroom, one energetic dog, very open common areas/living room, there is a washer and dryer but the dryer isnt used much, and wireless internet.

The house has in the past been occupied by queers, musicians, cats and dogs, artists, traveling friends, etc. I am in my mid twenties and have lived in Philadelphia for 5 years. I am committed to being non-racist, non-sexist, non-transphobic and generally just tolerant and concerned for the well being of anyone I share a home with. Non-jerk. I like to be friendly with the neighbors, and keep the house reasonably clean so it can feel like a home. I am a maker of things and go to school so am often busy but am at the moment really enjoying the relaxed vibe of summer. I would like to live with folks who are similarly minded and relatively relaxed. I am queer and it's a pretty important part of who I am. I am interested in gardening, cooking together, ukuelle, skill shares, making music, comic books, keeping my brain stimulated, and just generally staying somewhat busy. It is important to me that you enjoy sharing a home with animals, specifically a medium/larger dog, and I am open to living with cats or other dogs. The house is undergoing some minor work, but that should be finished come September.

Looking for folks who have experience in these kind of living situations or have lived in some sort of collective environment before.

If you are interested feel free to contact me and share a bit about yourself, your quirks, questions, what you are looking for, etc!

I need someone willing to take over on or before June 29th. Please email me at lana dot marks at gmail dot com if you're interested.

Applying for Spring [Jun. 3rd, 2009|09:37 am]
The University of the Arts
[Current Location |Pensacola, FL]
[mood |artisticartistic]

I'm interested in applying for the spring semester, and I wanted to know:
1- When is the deadline? I can't seem to find information about it anywhere.
2- If I'm interested in pursuing 2-d animation, what program should I apply to? (Animation vs. Film/Animation)
3- I'm a fairly descent artist, should I include my digital work in my portfolio?
4- How is dorm life? I have relatives who live in Philly who I could stay with, but I'm not sure I want to miss out on the experience of dorm life.

Any help would be appreciated : ]
If my questions seem stupid, then don't say so XD I just need a little help, and I'm in Florida, so I can't just walk in and ask people.

Awesome Apartment for Rent! [May. 28th, 2009|03:00 pm]
The University of the Arts

[Current Location |Center City Philadelphia]

Hey UArts,
Awesome apartment for rent in early July (like July 5th). $1100/month, at around 10th and Pine. Perfect for a single student or a couple.

One block from Whole Foods and Superfresh, Four blocks from Hamilton Hall/Anderson, three blocks from where South St. starts to get interesting, five-ish blocks from Washington Square west, half a block from Seger Dog Run (dog park), half a block from The Foodery.

The apartment has a living room, galley kitchen, bedroom and bath. There's a gated shared courtyard. And a working fireplace...which is awesome.

Two air conditioners installed (one in living room, one in bedroom), water, garbage and cooking heat included in rent. General heating is electric and not included in utilities.

We're making the move to Fishtown, but if you're still a student and want a really nice place that we've treated really well, message me to set up an appointment!
